Exploring Leadership Approaches Publilius Syrus wrote, â€Å"Anyone can hold the helm when the sea is calm,† meaning any person can be a leader when operations are working correctly (Pozin, 2014). What type of leader stands out when complex problems arise? Two leadership approaches, collective and leader-member exchange, have opposing principles guiding the success of the methods. One approach foregoes a designated leader and enables team members to reach an objective collectively, whereas the differing approach bases its success on the dyadic relationship between the leader and follower. Leaders must recognize the strengths and weaknesses of each approach and decide which method is more appropriate for the situation, as is the case for the United States Coast Guard. Leadership Approaches Leadership theories differ in motivational concepts, but most agree effective leaders inspire followers to work toward a common goal by doing the best job possible (Reed Bogardus, 2012).
